I am writing to express my deep concern about the ongoing disposal of radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. As you may be aware, since the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that caused the disaster, large amounts of radioactive water have been stored at the power plant, and it has been reported that the Japanese government plans to release it into the ocean.

I urge you to take immediate action to address this issue and work with your colleagues in Congress and the U.S. government to put pressure on the Japanese government to not dump this nuclear waste into the ocean and to find a safe and responsible solution for the disposal of this radioactive water.

I am particularly concerned about the impact that the release of this water could have on our country’s coast and oceanic ecosystem. Moreover, the increased health threats to our fisheries, marine sanctuaries, citizens, and tourists visiting the west coast. Tritium is noted to not be safe (Latest science shows that ingesting tritium mutates mitochondrial DNA, causing cancers and organ failure, with detrimental effects on fetal development), and nuclear and marine experts know that dilution does not happen with nuclear waste, but is bioaccumulated in ocean life, concentrating and working its way up the food chain. These impacts are catastrophic to biological life.

Leading ocean experts from the National Association of Marine Laboratories, including Monterey Bay Research Institute, Yale, Stanford, and the University of Southern California, have all aligned against this plan.

Many scientists agree that we are living during the 6th Great Mass Extinction event on Earth. The risks are too high that this nuclear wastewater, which TEPCO is not allowing independent 3rd parties to test before dumping into the Pacific Ocean, will certainly be an added threat to impact oceanic ecosystem collapse.

I would greatly appreciate a response to this letter outlining any actions that you and your colleagues in Congress are taking to address this issue and any information about the risks to California’s coast and oceanic ecosystem, as well as the health hazards and economic impact for Californians and tourists visiting our state.
